Finding your first three clients

Your first clients come from people who already know you. A gentle, practical way to start the conversation.

The first three clients are the hardest and the most important. They give you real feedback, a first testimonial (if they're happy to share one) and the confidence that someone will pay for what you do.

Start close to home

If you also need people to discover your work online, the first-visitors guide explains how to create one useful page, choose a distribution channel, and learn from the response.

Former colleagues, friends with small businesses, your community groups, your professional network. Tell them what you're offering and who it's for. You're not asking them to buy; you're asking whether they know anyone who might need it.

Offer a clear pilot

“I'm taking on three pilot clients this month at a starter rate in exchange for honest feedback” is an easy invitation. Agree on scope, timeline and price in writing, even for a friend.

Over-deliver on communication, not scope

Send a short update at each step. Deliver on the date you promised. Clients remember being kept in the loop far more than they remember an extra bonus you added at midnight.

Ask for two things at the end

First: “What would have made this better?” Second, if they were happy: “Would you be comfortable sharing a sentence about working with me, or introducing me to one person who might need this?”

Before you reach out, it helps to know exactly what you're offering. The First Paid Offer worksheet walks you through the buyer, the deliverable and a small test.
