Start an AI affiliate side hustle: pick one program and publish one useful tutorial
A five-hour experiment for choosing an AI affiliate program, checking real terms, making a useful demonstration and tracking results without income promises.
You do not need a directory of fifty AI tools to begin an affiliate publishing experiment. You need one audience, one problem you understand and one helpful piece of content. The work is researching, demonstrating, explaining and reaching people who need that answer.
Affiliate publishing earns from qualifying referrals. Client services earn from delivering agreed work. If you want to sell a defined deliverable, start with our AI design pilot. If you enjoy teaching and building an audience, the experiment below can help you test affiliate publishing.
Match a program to something you can teach
Here are five researched starting points. Public terms were checked November 4, 2026. These are not hands-on ratings or evidence that your application will be accepted.
| If you can help with… | Investigate | Public program snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Editing spoken recordings | Descript | Advertises $25 for each new subscriber referred; check current eligibility and dashboard offer |
| Producing narration from approved scripts | ElevenLabs | 22% for Starter, Creator, Pro and Scale; 11% for Business during the first 12 months; enterprise excluded |
| Building small workflow automations | Make | 35% for 12 months; an automation platform that can support AI workflows |
| Turning procedures into training videos | Synthesia | 25% on qualifying net payments; Starter and Creator plans, 60-day cookie advertised |
| Choosing professional profile imagery | HeadshotPro | 30% on sales; 60-day cookie and $25 payout threshold advertised |
Choose one candidate you can explain without borrowing someone else's experience. If you do not have enough access to demonstrate it, use an accurately labeled documentation comparison or select a tool you already use. Application and tracking conditions can differ from a public summary.
A five-hour first-week experiment
These time boxes are planning suggestions. Setup and learning may take longer; reduce the scope instead of rushing the evidence.
- Hour 1: choose the question. List three questions you can answer for one audience. Pick the one closest to a decision, such as whether a tutor can turn a lesson recording into a useful short clip.
- Hour 2: check access and terms. Read the official program page and agreement. Record qualifying purchases, referral duration, attribution, payout timing, required setup and permitted channels. Apply only with accurate information.
- Hours 3–4: make one demonstration. Use a recording or input you own. Capture the steps, a useful output, a mistake you corrected and a limitation. Note the plan and date.
- Hour 5: publish and record the baseline. Create one tutorial and one short excerpt. Include a clear commission disclosure and a sensible next step. Use an issued referral link only after approval and on permitted properties.
Your first milestone is a helpful, accurate tutorial that a reader can use. A commission may take longer or may not happen. Do not buy your own product through your referral link to create a result.
Let AI organize the evidence
Audience: [specific people]. Question: [one decision]. Here are my demonstration notes, sources and limitations: [notes]. Outline a tutorial with prerequisites, exact steps, observed result, problems I encountered, who should skip the tool and a next step. Separate my observations from vendor claims. Flag missing facts. Do not invent earnings, quotes, feature tests or prices. Leave a clear place for my commission disclosure.
Check the outline against the source recording. Watch for subtle exaggeration: “worked on this sample” is not the same as “works for every client.” Show the actual output where you have permission, including imperfections relevant to the decision.
Understand the money before scaling
A recurring rate does not mean lifetime income. It can stop after a fixed period, when a customer cancels or when the program changes. A tracked sale may be reversed, and an approved commission may wait for a payout threshold or payment schedule.
Illustrative example: three approved $25 commissions total $75. Subtract $30 of direct experiment costs and $45 remains before your time, overhead and taxes. If all three are still pending, record them as pending rather than earned cash. This arithmetic is not an expected outcome.
Track the article URL, publication date, time spent, direct costs, relevant views, affiliate clicks, attributed sales, pending commission, approved commission and cash received. Treat very small numbers as early observations, not a reliable conversion forecast.
Use the next week to improve one thing
If readers cannot find the tutorial, revisit the buyer question and distribution. If they read but do not click, inspect whether the tool fits the task. If they click without reported sales, check the destination, eligibility, attribution delays and available sample size before drawing conclusions.
Answer one real follow-up question. That might become a setup checklist, a comparison with a free method or a troubleshooting video. Each piece should add useful information instead of repeating the same affiliate pitch.
